An outbreak of the deadly E. coli bacteria has sparked several lawsuits in a central Ohio community. In the latest case, area resident Amanda Adams claims that she was made ill as a result of tainted ground beef she purchased from a local Kroger’s grocery store. Boat Rental Shop Named in Wrongful Death Case
Chicago resident J.C. Trotter died earlier this summer in a drowning accident. Trotter and his party were fishing on a river that had been declared too dangerous for public use in the aftermath of storms and flooding. Trotter’s estate has claimed that the boat shop that rented a fishing boat to the party is negligent, as shop personnel did not inform the men that boating and swimming had been temporarily suspended in the area. The lawsuit asks for at least $50,000 in damages.

Medical Malpractice Suit Filed in Castration Case
After complaining of groin pain, Cincinnati resident Stephen Kosti was admitted to an area hospital to undergo an exploratory procedure. During the diagnostic test, Dr. Gary Kirsch determined that the right testicle should be removed, as there was a strong possibility that potentially fatal cancer was the culprit behind the pain. After the procedure had been performed, Kosti sought a second opinion. Further tests determined that the removed testicle was completely cancer-free. Kosti has initiated a malpractice lawsuit in the case, requesting a jury trial.

Horse-Car Collision Prompts Personal Injury Lawsuit
Mairead Coogan certainly didn’t expect to collide with a horse as she was driving in the northern New Mexico town of Tesuque, but that’s exactly what happened to the new teen driver in August 2007. Horses from the nearby Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort and Spa had escaped their corral, and resort staff did not act quickly to round up the errant animals. The Coogan family has filed a lawsuit against the resort, claiming negligence or asking for an unspecified amount of compensatory damages.

Chicago Area Family Awarded $9.75 in Birth Injury Settlement
When Rosa Lopez’ pregnancy entered its 41st week, her doctors decided to induce labor with the drug Pitocin. However, the drug’s action proved to be too intense, putting the fetus under pressure and depriving the baby of much-needed oxygen during delivery. As a result, the child, Madeleine, suffers from severe brain damage and will require ongoing care for the rest of her life. After several years of negotiation, the individual doctors were dropped from the suit and the hospital agreed to pay a settlement of $9.75 million.

Last-Minute Settlement in Hotel Electric Shock Case
When a 47-year-old commercial airline pilot decided to take a hot shower in his Virginia Beach hotel room before taking off on another long day of flying, he certainly wasn’t expecting to receive an electrical shock that would essentially put an end to his decades-long career. An exposed light bulb near the shower stall emitted a strong shock after being splashed with water from the shower, and when the pilot’s hand accidentally grazed the bulb, he received a shock so powerful that he was temporarily knocked unconscious. Later, it was found that the shock had caused irreparable damage to his optic nerve and vision acuity, rendering him unqualified for continued service as a pilot. After a trial, the parties settled for $1.5 million before the jury could return a verdict in the case.
