On December 23, 2007, Indiana resident Jose B. Lemus-Rodriguez was shot and killed under unclear circumstances. That night, Lemus-Rodriguez had been detained for suspected intoxication while driving. Soon afterward, Lemus-Rodriguez escaped, leading Fort Wayne police on an extended car chase. After police had managed to slow Lemus-Rodriguez’ vehicle, James Arnold, a newly recruited police officer, fired his weapon repeatedly at the car, emptying an entire ammunition clip into the driver’s side. Lemus-Rodriguez sustained nine bullet wounds in the incident, which ultimately proved fatal. A wrongful death claim has recently been filed on behalf of the Rodriguez family.
