$28 Million Settlement Awarded in Big Dig Wrongful Death Case

The “Big Dig” is an ambitious public works project in Boston that was recently completed after nearly a decade of construction. However, the safety standards of the project were called into question by the death of Boston resident Melina Del Valle, who was killed when her car was crushed by a tunnel ceiling collapse in July 2006. Del Valle’s husband and children filed suit against the construction companies and public agencies who oversaw the project, claiming multiple instances of negligence and failed oversight. The case was recently settled out of court, with a total award of $28 million to the surviving members of the Del Valle family.
