Company that Manufactured Defective Ax Ordered to Pay $1 Million

Schenectady, New York resident Richard Van Norden was chopping wood in his backyard in November 2003 when the ax he was using broke apart, launching a sharp piece of metal into his eye. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, Van Norden lost vision in his eye, impacting his ability to continue his work as a crane operator. A judge agreed that the design of the ax was defective and that its manufacturer, the Mann Edge Tool Company, was to blame in the incident. A combined judgment of more than $1 million was awarded in the case.
