Family of Minneapolis-Area Woman Killed in Fatal Crash Files Lawsuit

56-year-old Margaret Lopez shared a close relationship with her husband of more than 20 years, Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy Joseph Lopez. She regularly accompanied Lopez on his patrols as part of the county’s community ride-along program. It was during one such late-night patrol when Margaret Lopez was fatally injured in a crash caused by an intoxicated driver, 23-year-old Elizabeth Rhodes, who registered a blood-alcohol level of .19 at the time of the incident, nearly twice the legal limit. Lopez’s surviving family members are suing Rhodes and the Big Ten Supper Club, the establishment that they claim negligently served alcohol to the driver.
