17-year-old Alonzo de la Torre was jogging with some friends alongside a narrow road in a Chicago-area neighborhood when he was struck and killed by 21-year-old driver Desiree Britt. Although no criminal charges were filed against Britt, de la Torre’s surviving family members have pointed out that she has a long record of driving irregularities, including several past arrests for traffic offenses. Discrepancies in the police account of the accident have led to charges of racism and may factor into the wrongful death suit recently filed by members of the de la Torre family. The case is scheduled to commence in late April.
